SEOUL - The National Assembly of South Korea failed to adopt a confirmation hearing report for the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) chief nominee, Lee Jin-sook, on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the main opposition Democratic Party raised objections which led to the non-adoption. Lee Jin-sook, who was under scrutiny for allegedly using her past position at MBC to undermine labor rights and misuse corporate credit cards, underwent an extensive three-day hearing last week. The legal deadline for the Assembly to submit the report was Monday, allowing President Yoon Suk Yeol a ten-day window to request the parliament to send the report. Lee, a former journalist noted for her coverage of Middle Eastern conflicts and South Korea’s first female war correspondent, was nominated earlier this month after her predecessor stepped down amidst impeachment threats by opposition parties. Despite the opposition, Lee's appointment to the KCC does not require National Assembly approval, unlike the prime minister's position which requires parliamentary consent.
