Phnom Penh Arrest of Chinese National Linked to Seoul Teen Drug Scam

PHNOM PENH—A Chinese national has been detained in Cambodia for allegedly supplying methamphetamine used in a scam targeting teenagers in Seoul, South Korea. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into the distribution of drug-laced drinks falsely advertised as cognitive enhancers to students in Seoul’s Gangnam Ward.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 38-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Phnom Penh with the collaboration of Cambodian police. The NIS has been investigating the case since the harmful drinks were given to teenage students in April of the previous year, which were subsequently used to blackmail their parents with threats of legal action and demands for money.

During the arrest, authorities discovered approximately 700 grams of methamphetamine at the suspect’s location, estimated to be enough for around 23,000 doses. The drugs were intended for distribution across China and Korea. The NIS indicated that the Chinese national is now awaiting sentencing by a Cambodian court. This follows a related trial in Seoul where four individuals connected to the scam received prison sentences ranging from seven to 15 years in October.
