SEOUL — The Pohang Steelers, reigning champions of the Korea Cup, have solidified their position in the semifinals after a commanding 5-1 victory over FC Seoul. Wednesday's match at the Pohang Steel Yard saw the Steelers inch closer to clinching a record sixth title in the nation's premier football competition.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Pohang’s offense was in full force with goals from Jeong Jae-hee, Oberdan, Lee Ho-jae, and Jorge Luiz. Lee Ho-jae initiated the scoring just before the half-time whistle, and Oberdan added to the tally shortly after the break. Although FC Seoul managed to narrow the gap with a goal from Kang Seong-jin, Pohang quickly regained control, with substitute Jeong Jae-hee making a significant impact by scoring twice, including a last-minute goal to seal the win.
Other quarterfinal matches saw Ulsan HD FC and Jeju United advancing with narrow victories over their respective opponents. The semifinals of the tournament are scheduled for August 21 and 28, promising intense competition as the remaining teams vie for the prestigious Korea Cup, newly renamed this year by the Korea Football Association to distinguish it from England’s FA Cup.
