Seoul: Police have deployed observation equipment to detect snipers as part of efforts to strengthen security for candidates of the June 3 presidential election, officials said Wednesday. The move comes in response to heightened security concerns as the election date approaches.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the announcement follows a request by the Democratic Party for enhanced protection for its candidate, Lee Jae-myung, after reports emerged of terror threats against him, including allegations of a sniper rifle being smuggled in. In response, police have ramped up security measures at campaign events, which now include special forces and bomb-sniffing dogs.
Additionally, police have deployed bomb disposal units and personnel equipped with drone jamming guns to counter potential terror attacks. Security personnel numbers have been increased compared to the 2022 presidential election, reflecting the elevated threat level.
"We are preparing for the possibility of terror that continues to be raised against presidential candidates," the National Police Agency stated, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring safety through comprehensive security measures.
