POSCO Future M Co., the battery materials unit of South Korea's POSCO Holdings Inc., announced on Friday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sila Nanotechnologies Inc., a U.S. startup, to jointly develop advanced battery materials. The collaboration aims to merge POSCO Future M's expertise in cathode and anode materials with Sila Nanotechnologies' silicon-based anode technology to advance next-generation battery materials.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Sila produces lithium-silicon batteries using nanoengineered silicon particles. These silicon anodes can store up to 10 times more energy than conventional graphite anodes, potentially extending the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs) and enabling faster charging. This partnership is expected to significantly impact the EV industry by enhancing the performance and efficiency of batteries.
Hong Young-jun, head of POSCO Future M's technology research laboratory, emphas ized the broader scope of the partnership, stating, "Beyond developing next-generation battery materials, we also agreed to expand cooperation to ensure a stable supply of these materials." This move is intended to secure a reliable supply chain for the advanced materials being developed.
POSCO Future M is currently known for producing cathode materials for nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) batteries. The company has plans to diversify its portfolio by including lithium iron phosphate (LFP), all-solid-state batteries (ASBs), and lithium manganese-rich (LMR) batteries. This strategic expansion positions POSCO Future M to meet the evolving demands of the battery industry.
