PPP Leader Calls for Personnel Changes in Presidential Office Amid First Lady Controversies

SEOUL: The leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) on Monday urged a significant reshuffle within the presidential office to address ongoing controversies surrounding first lady Kim Keon Hee's alleged undue influence over state matters. According to Yonhap News Agency, Han Dong-hoon, a prominent figure within the party, voiced these concerns following a supreme council meeting. Han emphasized that Kim Keon Hee does not hold any official government position and should not have any political connections influencing the presidential office. The allegations suggest that approximately seven officials may be under her influence, impacting decisions related to personnel and policy. Han argued that an internal request from the party leader for a reshuffle, if accepted by President Yoon Suk Yeol, could serve as an opportunity to regain public trust by demonstrating a commitment to transparency and governance reform. This call for action has deepened existing divisions within the party, with factions loyal to P resident Yoon criticizing Han's approach as exacerbating political tensions. The rift comes ahead of a crucial meeting between Yoon and Han scheduled for early next week, where they are expected to discuss the allegations against Kim, including her involvement in a stock manipulation case, acceptance of luxury gifts, and interference in party candidate nominations for the upcoming April elections. Han, who had previously been a close associate of Yoon during their careers in prosecution, has seen his relationship with the president strained over differing views on handling the controversies surrounding the first lady. Earlier this month, Han also publicly urged the prosecution to conclude its investigation into the stock manipulation allegations in a manner that the public would find acceptable and suggested that Kim should withdraw from public engagements.
