President Lee Dismisses Reelection Speculation, Focuses on Reforms

Manila:President Lee Jae Myung has dismissed speculation about seeking a constitutional revision to extend his term, committing instead to advancing reforms.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee addressed concerns by stating that any constitutional revision would require the support of at least 200 lawmakers, including those from the opposition, making it impossible to pursue at his discretion.

Lee emphasized that there is no need to worry about conspiracy theories regarding a constitutional revision for reelection. He clarified that a parliamentary or semi-presidential system is not his preferred path for constitutional reform.

Lee has consistently denied intentions to seek reelection through constitutional changes, despite accusations from his opponents. He reassured his commitment to reforms, acknowledging that while his administration has moved quickly on its agenda, overly radical or hasty reforms could lead to "fatigue."

He urged those who see insufficient reforms to identify specific tasks, promising swift implementation where feasible.

On the topic of prosecution reform, Lee described himself as a "victim of the previous administration and some rogue political prosecutors," while maintaining that investigations and indictments are crucial for social order. He highlighted the need for practical reforms that ensure institutional functionality with minimal side effects and potential for abuse.

As part of a major overhaul, the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency (SCIA) and the Public Prosecution Service were launched on October 2, separating investigative and prosecutorial powers for the first time in 78 years. Lee encouraged patience and cooperation to move towards a more unified society.
