Seoul:President Lee Jae Myung has called for proactive efforts to prevent violent crimes to ensure a “supersafe” society following recent incidents involving random victims and family members.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee made these remarks during a pan-government meeting focused on building a supersafe country. This initiative comes in response to heightened public safety concerns after a stabbing spree in Incheon and a suspected arson in southern Seoul. The stabbing incident left several people injured, one critically, while the suspected arson resulted in 19 injuries, including one serious case.
Additionally, last week, public outrage erupted when a man was apprehended for allegedly stabbing his mother-in-law to death and kidnapping his estranged wife, despite previous warning signs that were reportedly overlooked by police. President Lee emphasized that the current situation, where people constantly worry about their safety, should not continue. He urged officials to develop a crime prevention system capable of detecting warning signs in advance, as part of a broader effort to combat violent crimes.
The president also proposed a pan-government action plan aimed at establishing a society where safety and security are a tangible reality for all. The meeting included officials from nine government bodies, such as ministers or vice ministers from the justice, gender equality, health, education, and interior ministries, alongside police representatives.
