President Yoon Accepts Australian Ambassador’s Resignation Amid Investigation

SEOUL – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday approved the resignation of the Ambassador to Australia, Lee Jong-sup, following widespread criticism over his appointment during an ongoing investigation. Lee's departure from his diplomatic post comes amid allegations of his involvement in an internal military probe related to a Marine's death last year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee tendered his resignation just 25 days after his appointment, amidst revelations that he had been prohibited from leaving South Korea due to the investigation. The controversy intensified after it was disclosed that Lee had been named ambassador in Canberra shortly after the travel ban was lifted, leading to accusations of him fleeing the country to escape the inquiry. Despite these allegations, Lee has maintained his innocence.

Lee returned to South Korea on March 21, eleven days after starting his ambassadorial duties, to participate in a defense cooperation meeting with South Korean ambassadors from six countries, including Australia. However, the timing and nature of the meeting have led to speculation about its purpose, suggesting it might have been arranged to facilitate Lee's return amid the ongoing controversy.

Lee's legal representative, Kim Jae-hoon, stated that Lee plans to remain in Seoul to "strongly respond to all procedures" related to the investigation. Despite Lee's eagerness to be questioned by the anti-corruption investigation office, his lawyer reported that there has been no communication from the office regarding his summoning.
