SEOUL – In response to the catastrophic downpours that have claimed lives and caused extensive damage, President Yoon Suk Yeol has directed the government to consider designating the hardest-hit areas as special disaster zones.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Yoon issued these instructions while returning from a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Washington, emphasizing the need for proactive support measures for the affected regions. The recent deluges, which are among the heaviest on record, resulted in at least five fatalities and forced thousands from their homes, particularly in the southern parts of the country.
The designation as a special disaster zone would enable the affected areas to receive government financial support for recovery efforts, along with relief funds for victims and other assistance. Yoon also urged preparedness for more torrential rains forecasted for the coming week.
