SEOUL — President Yoon Suk Yeol is contemplating the dispatch of a special envoy to the Czech Republic, aiming to advance discussions on South Korean nuclear power plant exports, following a favorable bid selection, the presidential office announced Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the envoy's mission will be to engage in detailed follow-up discussions regarding nuclear power plant exports. Although the envoy’s identity and the date of the visit are yet to be determined, this move comes after a South Korean consortium, led by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, was named the preferred bidder for a project to construct two nuclear reactors in the Czech Republic. This marks a significant potential achievement for South Korea, positioning it to secure its first international nuclear construction deal since the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in the United Arab Emirates in 2009.
In a related effort, President Yoon has urged his government to reinforce the national nuclear power ecosystem, signaling strong governmental support for the nuclear sector amid global energy transitions.
