Outgoing Defense Minister Shin Won-sik transitions to the role of national security adviser, as announced by the presidential office.
According to Yonhap News Agency, these appointments are part of a strategic realignment to strengthen the country's defense and security in response to escalating global tensions. Kim Yong-hyun, a former three-star Army general, has been pivotal in key security operations since his appointment as PSS chief in May 2022. His new role as defense minister is pending a parliamentary confirmation, though he may be appointed directly by the president if necessary.
