Prime Minister Pledges to Preserve Hangeul’s Value in AI Era

Seoul:Prime Minister Han Seong-sook on Friday committed to preserving the significance of the Korean writing system, Hangeul, in the age of artificial intelligence.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Han made this announcement during a ceremony celebrating the centenary of Hangeul Day, which honors the Korean script created by King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty in 1443 and officially adopted in 1446.

Han emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring that Hangeul is cherished both domestically and internationally, maintaining its value in the AI era. As a former chief executive of Naver, she highlighted the growing importance of language in linking people with AI technologies.

The Prime Minister revealed plans to increase the number of Korean language corpora used for AI training from 174 to 340 by 2030, with the aim of improving AI's understanding of the language. She also mentioned that the country intends to expand the number of King Sejong Institutes, which teach Korean abroad, from the current 273 to over 350 by 2030.

Meanwhile, the National Hangeul Museum is slated to reopen in 2028 following a fire last February. Lim Seong-hwan, the museum's director, described it as a "repository of memory" and expressed commitment to promoting Hangeul. He stated that a construction company would be selected based on a safety inspection, with construction set to begin at the year's end, aiming for a reopening on Hangeul Day in 2028.
