Producer Prices Rise in August Due to Increase in Agricultural Goods Prices

South korea: South Korea's producer prices experienced an uptick in August, primarily driven by an increase in the prices of agricultural goods, a development attributed to a recent heat wave, according to data released by the central bank on Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the producer price index (PPI), which serves as a key indicator of future consumer inflation, rose by 0.2 percent last month compared to July. This increase followed a 0.4 percent decline in the previous month, as per preliminary data from the Bank of Korea (BOK). Notably, the index had witnessed its first decline since August 2025 in July.

On an annual basis, producer prices increased by 7.9 percent in August, marking an acceleration from the 7.7 percent year-on-year gain recorded in the previous month. Producer prices hold significant importance as they offer insights into future inflation trends, influencing the prices businesses set for consumers in the forthcoming months.

The Bank of Korea highlighted that the prices of industrial goods, including petroleum and chemical products, remained stable in August compared to the prior month. Meanwhile, prices for electricity, gas, and water supplies rose by 0.9 percent.

The data further revealed that prices for agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products surged by 3.8 percent in August, a notable increase from the 1.5 percent rise seen in the previous month. This spike was primarily attributed to the prolonged high temperatures experienced during the month.

Conversely, the domestic supply price index, which encompasses both producer and import prices, recorded a 1.3 percent month-on-month decrease in August, according to the data.
