Promising K-pop girl group flaunts traditional paper Hanji in video

The K-pop girl group NewJeans appears in a promotional video on the excellence of the traditional paper Hanji.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF) on Jan. 8 jointly released the full version of the video to support the planning and development of Hallyu (Korean Wave)-related collaborative content in the Hanji sector.

This video showcases the superiority of Hanji and the process of promoting to the world new cultural items made of the paper.

In the video, the group wears Hanbok for daily wear and hosts a talk show on Hanji’s excellence, appeal and value under the theme “Hanji Embraces Nature.” The background is decorated with Hanji items from last year and props made of the paper.

Along with Hanji expert and National Intangible Cultural Heritage Ahn Chi-yong, NewJeans members in the video choose fresh flowers of their choosing to experience floating Hanji and make lanterns with flower-decorated Hanji. They also present a performance of throwing bundles of paper mulberry fiber, or paper mulberry that is ground and turned into something like cotton, on a huge canvas coated with colors selected by each member.

In the middle of this month, one flower lantern and three large-sized works related to Hanji made by the group will be sold via online auction. The proceeds will go to Hanji workshops and artisans to boost the sector.

Following the release of the main video, the KCDF plans to release a series of short videos each lasting about a minute featuring highlights and behind-the-scenes content.

“Through the serious but vivacious appearance of NewJeans experiencing Hanji, we expect our traditional paper Hanji to grab global attention and interest,” the foundation said.
