DAEJEON - Representative Lee Jae-myung, former leader of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP), has significantly bolstered his chances of returning as party leader by winning two more leadership primaries with overwhelming support.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee secured approximately 90 percent of the votes in the recent primaries held in the central cities of Daejeon and Sejong. This impressive streak has positioned him favorably in the race, with just one more primary remaining. In Daejeon, Lee achieved 90.81 percent of the vote, a commanding lead over former lawmaker Kim Doo-gwan and candidate Kim Ji-soo. Similarly, in Sejong, his share was 90.21 percent. These victories add to his dominant performance across the 16 primaries conducted thus far.
The Democratic Party is set to conclude its series of primaries with a final vote in Seoul on August 17. The results of this last primary will precede the party's national convention, where the new party leader and members of its Supreme Council will be officially announced, following Lee's resignation in June to comply with party rules for candidacy.
