Seoul:Ruling party leaders in South Korea are facing criticism for actions deemed inappropriate and misaligned with the expectations of their positions. The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), which came to power following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, is now under scrutiny due to the conduct of several senior officials, including former Prime Minister and current DPK chief, Kim Min-seok.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Min-seok has been involved in a series of controversial incidents. On October 15, he interrupted a musical performance at a festival in Sunchang, North Jeolla Province, by stepping on stage. Just days later, he faced backlash for parking his car in a hospital's emergency area while paying respects to a firefighter who died in a recent fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. Additionally, reports have emerged of Kim's early morning visit to Gangseo Fire Station in Seoul on September 30, arriving at a time when firefighters were still resting.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae, also a member of the DPK, has apologized for comments made during an October 13 provincial audit, where she described firefighting expenses as a financial burden. Her initial conditional apology at the site of the Bucheon fire, where a firefighter died, further fueled public outrage. DPK Rep. Boo Seung-chan also faced criticism for similar remarks about firefighting costs and has since issued an apology on social media.
The leadership of the DPK, including Chief Kim and floor leader Han Byung-do, have publicly apologized for their actions. The party's conduct has been questioned, with calls for a reevaluation of their core values and ethical standards. Recent polls indicate that public support for the DPK has declined, with the opposition People Power Party (PPP) leading in popularity.
The Lee Jae Myung administration is navigating a challenging political environment with growing public disillusionment over unmet policy promises, such as economic reforms and housing market stabilization. The administration's response to these issues will be crucial in regaining public trust and support.
