Ruling Party to Accept Impending Constitutional Court Ruling on Yoon’s Impeachment

Seoul: The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has announced that it will accept the forthcoming decision from the Constitutional Court regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment trial. This statement was made by the party’s floor leader, Rep. Kweon Seong-dong, ahead of the court’s anticipated ruling.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Constitutional Court is deliberating whether to reinstate or remove President Yoon from office following his impeachment due to a brief martial law declaration on December 3. Although the date of the ruling has not been disclosed, there is widespread speculation that it will occur this week. Rep. Kweon emphasized the binding nature of the court’s decision, stating, “Our party’s official stance is that (we) will accept the court’s decision,” and highlighted that constitutional trials are single-trial cases.

If the court rules to oust Yoon, a snap presidential election will be necessary within 60 days. Conversely, if he is reinstated, Yoon will complete his term, which ends in May 2027. Rep. Kweon also urged the court to expedite its decision on the impeachment trial of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. The urgency stems from Washington’s designation of Seoul as a “sensitive” country in January, prior to former President Joe Biden’s departure from office.

Kweon noted that Prime Minister Han has been suspended from his duties for 80 days, resulting in what he described as a significant loss of valuable time at the national level. The situation is further complicated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s recent announcement that the Biden administration has categorized Seoul at the lowest level on its “sensitive and other designated countries list,” which could potentially disrupt collaborative efforts in advanced technologies.
