SEOUL - The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to veto a controversial bill that mandates a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death. PPP floor leader Choo Kyung-ho expressed the party's objection to the bill during an emergency committee meeting on Monday, criticizing it as "unconstitutional" and accusing the opposition Democratic Party (DP) of pushing it through without bipartisan support.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the PPP contends that the bill, which was passed last week by the National Assembly, contains constitutional violations and lacks the necessary bipartisan agreement. He stated that the party would press for a presidential veto if the DP continued to advance what he termed flawed legislation. The proposed legislation aims to appoint a special counsel to investigate alleged interference in the internal investigation following the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who died during a mission to search for victims of a heavy downpour in July 2023. This move comes after a similar bill was vetoed by President Yoon during the previous legislative session.
