MOSCOW: Russia has indicated that a visit from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to Moscow could take place next year, highlighting ongoing high-level exchanges between the two neighboring countries. The possibility of the visit was confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who emphasized the continuous development of strong ties with Pyongyang. According to Yonhap News Agency, Peskov addressed reporters on Friday, acknowledging the potential visit and underlining the importance of maintaining diplomatic and strategic relations with North Korea. "Of course, close neighbors constantly exchange visits at the highest levels," Peskov stated, underscoring Russia's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations "in all areas." The spokesperson's remarks followed comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding North Korea's military involvement in Russia. At a recent multilateral summit in Kazan, Putin was questioned about the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia in support of its military ac tions in Ukraine. While he neither confirmed nor denied the troop presence, Putin emphasized the significance of the mutual treaty recently signed with North Korea, stressing that the nature of their cooperation is Russia's internal matter. In a subsequent interview with the state-run Rossiya-1 TV channel, Putin elaborated on the strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang, particularly focusing on Article 4 of the treaty, which includes provisions for mutual defense. He asserted that any decisions regarding military cooperation would be made independently by Russia and North Korea. "When we need to decide something, we will certainly make a decision," Putin said, referring to potential joint exercises, training, or other forms of military collaboration. The comments reflect Russia's strategic interests in cultivating a robust partnership with North Korea, amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and its military engagement in Ukraine. The potential visit by Kim Jong-un, if realized, would mark a signifi cant step in solidifying these bilateral ties.
