Yeoncheon: South Korean and U.S. troops have commenced a joint river-crossing exercise near the border with North Korea, as announced by the South Korean Army. This exercise aims to enhance the joint operational capabilities of the two nations' military forces.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the six-day training has been taking place on the Imjin River in Yeoncheon, approximately 50 kilometers north of Seoul, since Saturday. The exercise involves around 600 troops, including those from the South Korean Army's 5th Engineer Brigade, a multipurpose bridge company, and the Stryker brigade under the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-US Combined Division.
The exercise also employs about 100 pieces of equipment. Among these are the CH-47D Chinook helicopter, K1E1 tank, and the U.S. Stryker combat vehicle, all of which are being used by the troops to construct a 180-meter pontoon bridge. This latest training session is being conducted in conjunction with the annual springtime Freedom Shield exercise between the allies, which concluded Thursday after an 11-day duration.
