S. Korea and U.S. to Enhance Shipbuilding Cooperation with NSCs at the Helm

Seoul: Senior security officials from South Korea and the United States have agreed to advance comprehensive cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, with the National Security Councils (NSCs) of both nations playing a central role, as announced by Seoul’s NSC. Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo and his U.S. counterpart, Alex Wong, reached this agreement during talks held in Washington. The discussions also emphasized thorough preparations against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, alongside reinforcing the allies’ combined defense posture.

According to Yonhap News Agency, both parties highlighted the significance of collaboration in the shipbuilding domain to bolster defense industry cooperation and maritime security. The agreement aims to enhance cooperation by positioning the NSCs of both countries at the forefront of these efforts. The discussions also included exploring cooperative measures to ensure that the capabilities of the South Korean military and the U.S. Forces Korea can achieve “greater synergistic” effects.

The recent talks serve as a continuation of a previous call between South Korea’s acting President Han Duck-soo and U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as consultations between National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik and U.S. officials last month.
