SEOUL: South Korea's defense authorities have sanctioned a plan to equip K2 battle tanks with a locally developed transmission system, marking a significant shift in the nation's military manufacturing strategy. This development is part of a broader effort to enhance the self-reliance of South Korea's defense industry. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Project Promotion Committee approved this initiative, which will see K2 tanks outfitted with a domestic power pack, including both the transmission and engine, starting with the fourth production batch set for completion by 2028. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) highlighted that the fully localized power pack is expected to facilitate efficient munitions support and bolster the export potential of the tanks. Initially, the K2 tanks were built with a German-designed power pack, prompting ongoing efforts by the arms procurement agency to transition to a locally manufactured version. The K2 tanks stand as a vital component of Sout h Korea's arms export portfolio, alongside the K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft, and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers. In addition to the K2 tank advancements, the committee approved an accelerated timeline for developing and deploying a low-altitude missile defense system. This system aims to counter North Korea's long-range artillery threats to the Seoul metropolitan area, with deployment now planned for 2033, two years earlier than originally scheduled. The committee also greenlit the acquisition of additional PAC-3 missiles and the modernization of the PAC-2 launcher to ensure compatibility with the newer PAC-3 system by 2031.
