SEOUL: South Korea cut greenhouse gas emissions by 6.5 percent more than its target in 2023, a presidential panel said Wednesday. Total emissions amounted to 624 million tons, with nearly all sectors reporting reductions surpassing the target. The energy transition sector reported an additional 10.2 percent reduction, industries saw an extra 6.8 percent reduction, and the building sector achieved an additional 7.1 percent reduction. The Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth attributed the significant reductions to several factors. Increased nuclear power development, improved industrial structures, and favorable global economic conditions were highlighted as key contributors to the achievement. The commission emphasized the importance of continuing reductions across all sectors. It called for the development and application of environm ent-friendly technologies and urged improvements in relevant policies to sustain and enhance the progress made in emission reductions.
