S. Korea Explores AI and Science Collaboration with Quebec

Seoul: The science ministry said Friday it has explored potential cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technology sectors with the Canadian province of Quebec. Park In-kyu, vice minister for science, technology, and innovation, met with Christopher Skeete, Quebec's minister of international relations, in Seoul to discuss collaboration in strategic areas.

According to Yonhap News Agency, during the meeting, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, or Mila, expressed its intention to seek partnerships with South Korea. The Montreal-based organization has around 1,000 experts, the ministry said. Park noted that combining Canada's advanced AI technology with South Korea's leadership in AI chips and manufacturing capacity could enhance industrial competitiveness for both nations.

Park highlighted ongoing discussions between South Korea and Canada over a submarine project, emphasizing efforts to expand cooperation in AI and science technology to create synergy. The South Korean consortium of Hanwha Ocean Co. and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. is a finalist in the bid for the major submarine project in Canada, competing with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The project is estimated to be worth 60 trillion won (US$40.8 billion).
