The chief of South Korea's state arms procurement agency announced plans to strengthen arms industry cooperation with British Commonwealth nations, highlighting the historical alliance and bravery of Commonwealth troops who fought alongside South Korean soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Defense Acquisition Program Administration Minister Lee Yong-cheol emphasized the significance of these collaborations during a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of a pivotal Korean War battle in Gapyeong. The event was attended by Army chiefs and ambassadors from Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Lee stated, "(We) will remember the noble sacrifice and dedication of the veterans who came to defend liberal democracy and continue to bolster ties with sending states in defense and security." This assertion underscores South Korea's commitment to honoring the contributions of Commonwealth forces and enhan cing strategic partnerships.
In April 1951, approximately 2,000 troops from the 27th Commonwealth Brigade engaged in intense combat with Chinese forces over three days. Their efforts were crucial in allowing South Korean and U.N. forces to fortify their defensive positions during the war.
