S. Korea to Host Memorial Event for Korean War Abductees This Weekend

Seoul: The unification ministry announced on Thursday that it will conduct a memorial event this weekend to honor those who were abducted by North Korea during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean War Abductees Remembrance Day event is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the National Memorial for Abductees during the Korean War, located in Paju, north of Seoul. This marks the second instance of the event since the remembrance day was officially designated by law in late 2024, with plans to observe it annually on June 28.

This year, the ministry intends to highlight the tragic history and ongoing pain suffered by the families of those abducted by North Korea. The event will feature musical performances and a video presentation aimed at sharing these poignant stories.

Approximately 300 individuals are expected to attend the event. Among them will be Vice Unification Minister Kim Nam-jung, family members of the abductees, and officials from related agencies, as confirmed by the ministry.
