Samsung Display Enhances IT OLED Offerings Through Strategic Partnerships with Intel and Qualcomm

SEOUL — Samsung Display Co. is set to broaden its organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel range for IT devices by deepening ties with tech leaders Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc., the company's CEO announced on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, speaking at the Korea Display Exhibition, the expansion will leverage the company's success in mobile OLEDs to enhance its IT OLED offerings. "We will continue to build on the differentiation of our mobile OLEDs by expanding into IT OLEDs through collaboration with system partners such as Intel and Qualcomm," Choi stated. He further noted ongoing discussions with numerous customers aiming to integrate AI capabilities directly on devices using Samsung's OLED panels.

Choi highlighted that the key to enhancing IT OLED competitiveness lies in scaling up production, advancing technology, and fostering strong customer relationships. Samsung Display, a crucial provider of mobile OLED panels for Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones and Apple Inc.'s iPhones, is also set to supply various OLED panel types for the forthcoming iPhone 16 series. Additionally, the company has begun providing OLED panels for Apple’s 11-inch iPad 13, marking its entry into the larger IT OLED market.

The demand for OLED panels in IT devices like laptops is on the rise, with industry reports suggesting an upcoming shift to OLED screens for Apple’s MacBook. In response, Samsung Display is ramping up its manufacturing capabilities, with a 4.1 trillion won (approximately US$3 billion) investment in a new 8.6-generation OLED production line expected to be operational by 2026. This line will have the capacity to produce 10 million laptop panels annually.

"The IT OLED business has just started, and our large-scale 8.6-generation production line will begin production soon," Choi added, underscoring the strategic importance of this expansion.
