Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co. is advancing the commencement of operations at its inaugural semiconductor fabrication plant in the Yongin chip cluster to 2029, a move that is one to two years ahead of its original schedule, industry sources revealed Sunday. This adjustment aligns with the government's accelerated efforts to develop the Yongin National Industrial Complex, a vital national strategic project designed to become Samsung's next-generation semiconductor manufacturing hub.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung plans to begin operations in 2029 at the first of six semiconductor plants set to be constructed at the Yongin industrial complex, located just south of Seoul. An industry official highlighted that this expedited timeline would allow Samsung to better address the swiftly increasing global demand for artificial intelligence chips.
In a related announcement, the chipmaker disclosed last month its mega project investment plan, which includes a 2,030 trillion won (US$1.35 trillion) investment in its Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters. Additionally, Samsung plans to allocate 400 trillion won to construct two new chip plants in Gwangju, situated 270 kilometers south of Seoul.
