Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co. announced it has invested $175 million in Element Biosciences through an expanded Series E funding round, making it the largest shareholder in the U.S.-based genomics technology company. This strategic move underscores Samsung's ongoing commitment to advancing its footprint in the field of precision medicine and digital health technologies.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the investment comes after Samsung's participation in Element's Series D funding round in July 2024. Element Biosciences, headquartered in San Diego, focuses on developing next-generation DNA sequencing and multiomics platforms, which are crucial for various applications such as biomedical research, drug discovery, clinical research, and agriculture.
Samsung's investment reflects its strategic interest in merging its expertise in artificial intelligence, medical devices, and digital health with Element's pioneering genomic analysis technology. Roh Tae-moon, co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, emphasized that the collaboration is expected to generate synergies that could significantly influence the future of personalized medicine.
Element Biosciences is noted for its advanced gene sequencing technology and multiomics capabilities. Multiomics involves the simultaneous analysis of multiple types of biological data, such as RNA, proteins, and DNA. This approach provides a more comprehensive insight into genetic information's role within living organisms, making it a significant area of interest for Samsung.
