Senior Prosecutor Confirms No Plans to Withdraw Indictments Against President Lee

Seoul:A senior prosecutor announced that there are no plans to withdraw indictments in cases involving President Lee Jae Myung.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Park Chul-woo, head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, addressed the matter during a parliamentary audit. He responded to opposition lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun's inquiry about any discussions or opinions shared with the Supreme Prosecutors Office or the justice ministry regarding the potential withdrawal of indictments against Lee. Park emphasized that the cases involving Lee are treated as any other legal case, despite the significant public interest.

Park further stated that it is against the principle to comment on the handling of specific cases, and it is inappropriate to discuss potential indictments or arrests during a parliamentary audit.

He also mentioned that he was not involved in the fact-finding team under the justice ministry's future committee for respect for human rights, which some suggest might influence the dropping of charges in the future, and had no knowledge of its investigations.

President Lee, who faced multiple criminal trials before his election in June last year, benefits from presidential immunity from prosecution, except in cases of insurrection or treason, resulting in the suspension of his trials.
