Seoul: A Seoul court is set to deliver its first ruling Wednesday against suspects allegedly involved in a courthouse riot in January that marked an unprecedented social crisis triggered by a ruling over an extension of detention against Yoon Suk Yeol. The Seoul Western District Court will hold a sentencing hearing at 10 a.m. against two individuals surnamed, Kim and So, respectively, who face charges of trespassing on the district courthouse in western Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, on Jan. 19, dozens of protestors broke into the court's compound after it issued a warrant that extended Yoon's arrest over his short-lived imposition of martial law in December. The two defendants have been charged with property damage by throwing bricks after breaking into the court. Kim also faces charges of assault for pushing police officers. During the case's first hearing on April 30, the two individuals admitted to all charges.
It will mark the first ruling against suspects allegedly involved in the riot. A sentencing hearing for four others, who allegedly assaulted police officers and reporters and broke into the courthouse, is scheduled to take place Friday.
In February, prosecutors announced they had indicted 63 people in connection with the riot.
