SEOUL, Police Announce Task Force to Boost Politician Safety Ahead of Elections

In Seoul, following recent attacks on high-profile lawmakers, the national police chief announced plans on Monday to establish a task force aimed at improving the safety of politicians in the lead-up to April's parliamentary elections. This decision comes in the wake of violent incidents targeting Rep. Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party, who was stabbed in the neck during a visit to Busan, and Rep. Bae Hyun-jin of the ruling People Power Party, who was assaulted with a rock by a teenager in Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the task force will collaborate closely with each political party to prepare for potential threats and facilitate the exchange of crucial safety information. Yoon also highlighted initiatives to deter copycat crimes, including regular monitoring for online threats or writings that could indicate the risk of such incidents. He emphasized that, if necessary, measures would extend to civil action responsibilities alongside criminal penalties.
