Seoul Reports Proposal for Historic Presidential Meeting

SEOUL—In a significant political development, President Yoon Suk Yeol has extended an invitation to the main opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, for a meeting at the presidential office. This invitation, issued on Friday, marks the first of its kind since President Yoon took office in May 2022.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Do-woon, the call to Lee Jae-myung followed the Democratic Party’s electoral success in last week’s parliamentary elections. President Yoon congratulated Lee and his party on their victory, proposing a face-to-face discussion in Yongsan, where the presidential office is located. "The president expressed his desire for the two leaders to begin regular communication, including frequent meetings, shared meals, and discussions over tea, to address state affairs collaboratively," Lee Do-woon noted during a press briefing.

The Democratic Party leader, who also secured reelection in his district in Incheon, responded positively to the invitation, acknowledging the president's gesture and the potential for future cooperation. This proposed dialogue comes after the Democratic Party, led by Lee, achieved a landslide victory, obtaining 192 seats against the ruling People Power Party’s 108 in the 300-member National Assembly.

Presidential aides are expected to work closely with their counterparts to finalize the details of the meeting, including its specific time and agenda.
