Seoul Stock Market Opens Higher Led by Tech Gains

Seoul:Seoul shares opened higher Thursday, driven by gains in technology stocks, despite concerns about inflation due to rising oil prices.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) increased by 4.78 points, or 0.07 percent, reaching 6,808.68 at the opening bell.

Technology stocks saw an upswing after Samsung Electronics reported an estimated operating profit of 107 trillion won (US$79.8 billion) for the third quarter, surpassing market expectations by 1.6 percent.

Meanwhile, the previous trading session saw a decline in major U.S. stock indices, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping by 0.66 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite falling by 0.22 percent.
