Seoul Supports U.N. Resolution for Palestinian Membership

Seoul, South Korea – South Korea has endorsed a United Nations resolution advocating for the full membership of Palestine, expressing hope that this could foster a two-state solution and bring enduring peace in the Middle East.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the resolution, however, faced a setback when the United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Thursday, hindering Palestine's bid for full membership, which it has sought for years. An official from the ministry emphasized, "Our government has continued to support the two-state solution as the only way to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict and build the foundation for lasting peace." Twelve members, including the U.S. and its allies like South Korea, supported the draft resolution which recommended the General Assembly to consider "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership" in the U.N. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained from the vote. Palestine has held the status of a "nonmember observer state" at the U.N. since 2012.
