According to Yonhap News Agency, on this date in 1984, South Korea secured a commendable seventh place at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, bringing home six gold, six silver, and seven bronze medals. In 1998, a diplomatic dispute with Russia over espionage allegations was resolved on the sidelines of an ASEAN forum in Manila, reflecting the complexities of post-Cold War international relations. The two nations, which established ties in 1990, sought to mend relations disrupted by mutual expulsions of intelligence agents.

Further notable events include the arrival of the first group of 460 North Korean defectors in Seoul in 2004, marking the largest defection since the Korean War. In 2006, South Korea launched a satellite from Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome, enhancing its capabilities in geographical monitoring and resource exploration.
