Gwangju:SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won announced plans to accelerate the construction of a new semiconductor cluster in the southwestern region of the country to address the increasing global demand for chips.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chey made these statements during a visit to Gwangju Air Base in the Jeonnam-Gwangju area, where SK hynix Inc. has proposed the new chip cluster. Chey emphasized the group's commitment to starting the project as soon as the necessary conditions are met.
Chey highlighted the rapid growth in chip demand, noting that the current situation necessitates a quicker supply response. Although a specific start date for construction has not been set, he reiterated that the group intends to break ground at the earliest opportunity.
The proposed cluster is expected to be approximately two-thirds the size of the existing facility under construction in Yongin, just south of Seoul. Chey's visit to the region was his first since the conglomerate revealed its construction plans in June.
Earlier this year, SK hynix and Samsung Electronics Co. announced long-term investment projects in the region, including plans for two new memory chip fabrication plants each. In July, Gwangju Air Base was chosen as the project site, with the government's goal of commencing large-scale production by 2030.
