Yongin: SK hynix Inc. is set to commence the second phase of construction for its first fabrication plant at the semiconductor cluster in Yongin, located south of Seoul, in August, according to industry sources on Thursday. This development marks a significant step in expanding the company's presence in the semiconductor manufacturing sector.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the groundbreaking for the initial fab took place in February last year, backed by a substantial investment of 31 trillion won (US$20.8 billion). The facility's design includes two structural frames and six cleanrooms, with current construction efforts focused on approximately half of the projected capacity. Furthermore, SK hynix has recently completed the construction plan for the second fabrication plant, indicating a commitment to rapid development.
The Yongin cluster is envisioned to eventually encompass four SK hynix fabrication plants, positioning it as a central hub for the production of artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips. The cluster aims to integrate SK hynix's production capabilities with those of materials suppliers, chip equipment manufacturers, and other essential infrastructure providers. This expansion is part of SK hynix's strategy to accelerate the development of the Yongin semiconductor cluster amid a global shortage of memory chips, driven by rising demand for AI infrastructure.
