Seoul:Captain Son Heung-min has matched former star Cha Bum-kun as the top goal scorer for the South Korean men's national football team.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Son achieved this milestone by scoring South Korea's only goal in their 4-1 defeat against Uruguay during a friendly match at Seoul World Cup Stadium. This marked his 58th international goal in his 149th appearance, solidifying his status as the country's leader in international caps among male players.
Son, aged 34, began his international career in December 2010 and netted his first goal in January 2011 against India. In the 80th minute of Monday's game, he scored with a piece of a cross from Lee Kang-in, marking his second goal under interim head coach Robert Moreno. Additionally, the goal was Son's 300th across both club and international competitions.
In comparison, Ji So-yun, a prominent figure in the South Korean women's national team, holds the all-time national goal-scoring record with 76 goals in 180 appearances.
