Los Angeles:Son Heung-min has reclaimed the top spot on the assists leaderboard in Major League Soccer (MLS) with his performance for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). In their latest match, Son contributed a goal and two assists, helping LAFC secure a 3-1 win against Austin FC at BMO Stadium.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Son's current tally of 15 assists this season has broken a tie with five other players, including Lionel Messi of Inter Miami, making him the sole leader in the MLS assists category. Alongside his assists, Son has scored seven goals, putting him three goals away from joining the ranks of players who have achieved double figures in both goals and assists this season.
The victory ended LAFC's four-match winless streak and marked the first time they scored more than two goals since their 4-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on July 25. After a scoreless first half, Son assisted Denis Bouanga seven minutes into the second half. Following an equalizer from Austin, Son provided another assist when Austin's goalkeeper Brad Stuver's clearance attempt struck him and bounced to Bouanga, who scored to make it 2-1. Son then scored himself in the 72nd minute, converting a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg to extend LAFC's lead.
Son was substituted in the 78th minute, and LAFC maintained their lead to win the match. This victory was the first under interim head coach Xavi Tamarit, who took over on October 1.
