South Korea Calls for North Korea’s Accountability Over Land Mine Incident at the UN

New York:South Korea has called on North Korea to take "responsible measures" at the United Nations, accusing it of violating the Armistice Agreement by intentionally planting a land mine that injured three South Korean soldiers near the inter-Korean border.

According to Yonhap News Agency, during a committee meeting of the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly, South Korean Ambassador to the U.N. Cha Ji-hoon stated that a joint investigation by the South Korean military and the United Nations Command confirmed the explosion on September 21 was caused by a land mine deliberately placed by North Korean forces south of the Military Demarcation Line.

Cha described the incident as a clear breach of the Armistice Agreement and urged North Korea to apologize and cease such actions. Despite this, the North Korean representative dismissed the accusation, claiming it was an attempt by South Korea to deflect responsibility.

The discussion also touched on North Korea's nuclear weapons program, with South Korea reaffirming its commitment to nuclear nonproliferation and urging North Korea to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In contrast, North Korea defended its nuclear arsenal as necessary to protect its sovereignty against longstanding U.S. threats.
