PARIS - South Korea further solidified its reputation as a powerhouse in Olympic archery by clinching its third gold medal in the sport at the Paris Olympics on Friday, maintaining a perfect record in the event with two more medal opportunities pending.
According to Yonhap News Agency, archers Kim Woo-jin and Lim Si-hyeon achieved gold in the mixed team event, decisively defeating Florian Unruh and Michelle Kroppen of Germany with a set score of 6-0. This victory contributed to South Korea's impressive tally of seven gold medals as the Games approach the second weekend. Both Kim and Lim had previously contributed to South Korea's gold medal successes in the men's and women's team events earlier in the Olympics and will next compete in the individual events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Beyond archery, South Korea also celebrated achievements in judo and badminton. Kim Min-jong secured a silver medal in the men’s +100-kilogram judo event after a formidable match against French judoka Teddy Riner, a legend with medals from five consecutive Olympics, including three golds. In women’s judo, Kim Ha-yun won a bronze medal in the +78kg division by overcoming Kayra Ozdemir of Turkiye with a skillful throw and shoulder hold, following a victory in the repechage round against Larisa Ceric of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In badminton, Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun added to South Korea’s medal haul by taking silver in mixed doubles, marking the nation’s first medal in this category since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They faced a challenging final against Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China, losing 2-0. Meanwhile, their compatriots Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung were unsuccessful in their bid for the bronze, falling to Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino.
Additionally, in table tennis, Shin Yu-bin is set to compete for the bronze medal in women’s singles after losing to the reigning champion Chen Meng of China. Shin's upcoming match against Japan’s Hina Hayata promises to be a critical moment for her in these Olympic Games.
