SEOUL: South Korea's film industry is set to release its first volleyball-themed movie, "One Win," directed by Shin Yeon-shick, which delves into the significance of achieving a singular, meaningful victory. The film follows the Pink Storm, a struggling volleyball team on the brink of disbandment, highlighting the poignant journey of striving for one significant win. According to Yonhap News Agency, director Shin Yeon-shick unveiled the inspiration behind "One Win" during a press conference, emphasizing the universal longing for personal fulfillment rather than striving for absolute success. The film's narrative centers on Kim Woo-jin, played by Song Kang-ho, who becomes the unexpected coach of the Pink Storm, a team acquired by the seemingly indifferent chaebol scion, Kang Jung-won, portrayed by Park Jeong-min. Kang aims to boost ticket sales by leveraging the team's underdog story, offering a substantial prize for a single season win. Song Kang-ho, known for his acclaimed roles in "Parasite" and "Broker," expressed his enthusiasm for the lighthearted sports film after a series of intense roles. He noted the film's ability to inspire courage and happiness despite its humble storyline, emphasizing the importance of connecting with audiences through diverse and experimental narratives. Park Jeong-min, who recently starred in Netflix's "Uprising," described his character as quirky yet deeply connected to the team, reflecting a personal journey of rooting for the underdogs. Director Shin, who has previously worked with both lead actors, shared the challenges of creating Korea's first volleyball film, citing the sport's dynamic nature and the complexities of filming. He credited advancements in cinematography and assistance from volleyball players for overcoming these obstacles. The film, which is scheduled for release in December, represents a bold step in South Korean cinema, tackling uncharted territory with a unique blend of sports and personal triumph.
