South Korea Expands Disaster Zone Designations After Deadly Downpours

SEOUL: President Yoon Suk Yeol has expanded the designation of special disaster zones to include an additional 14 areas in South Korea's southern regions following recent severe rainfall, according to an announcement from his office. According to Yonhap News Agency, the newly designated zones include localities such as Gimhae and Changwon in South Gyeongsang Province and Jangheung-gun in South Jeolla Province. These areas suffered significant damage from heavy rainfalls that occurred in late September. The designation as special disaster zones allows these areas to access government financial support aimed at recovery efforts and provides relief funds for the victims among other benefits. The presidential office detailed that President Yoon has instructed for swift emergency recovery operations in the affected regions. He also emphasized the need for continued vigilance and preparedness across other parts of the country, anticipating potential downpours in October, as conveyed by presidential spokesperson J eong Hye-jeon. The proactive measures by the South Korean government highlight an ongoing commitment to not only address the immediate impacts of natural disasters but also to prepare for future meteorological events.
