South Korea Launches National AI Research Lab to Enhance Global Competitiveness

SEOUL: South Korea has inaugurated a national artificial intelligence research lab in Seoul, aiming to position itself among the top three global leaders in AI technology. This move, announced by the science ministry, marks a significant step in the country's strategic plan to strengthen its AI capabilities and foster international collaboration. According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean government has committed to investing a total of 94.6 billion won (approximately US$68.2 million) into the National AI Research Lab by the year 2028. The funding is intended to enable the lab to spearhead South Korea's joint AI research efforts with global partners, nurture AI talent, and cultivate an integrated ecosystem linking the AI industry. The lab will host collaborative projects involving scientists from South Korea, the United States, Canada, France, and other countries, focusing on areas such as neural scaling law and the development of a robot foundational model. Science Minister Yoo Sang-im emphasized th e significance of this development, stating that the successful establishment and operation of the lab will mark a new milestone in the nation's AI advancement. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy, launched earlier this year, to enhance South Korea's AI competitiveness and secure a position within the Group of 3 in the global AI sector. The initiative has already seen the formation of a presidential AI committee and the creation of a joint AI research lab in partnership with New York University in September. Looking ahead, the government also plans to inaugurate an AI safety research institute next month, focusing on ensuring the safe development and application of AI technologies.
