South Korea Pledges $12 Million in Aid to Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

SEOUL — South Korea has committed to providing $12 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan and neighboring countries currently impacted by a prolonged military conflict.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The announcement was made by Choi Jai-chul, South Korean Ambassador to France, during an international humanitarian conference in Paris. "Our government will continue to join international efforts to assist countries suffering from the ongoing humanitarian crisis as a responsible member of the international community and nonpermanent member of the U.N. Security Council for the 2024-2025 term," the South Korean Foreign Ministry stated in a press release.

The funding comes as the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that around 8.6 million people have been displaced due to the conflict in Sudan. The International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighboring Countries, co-hosted by France, Germany, and the European Union, saw participation from 58 countries. The conference aimed to urge the conflicting parties in Sudan to cease hostilities, marking one year since the conflict commenced.
