Seoul:South Korea will continue to take necessary measures based on clear principles in response to the recent mine blast in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), According to country's top security adviser. The government remains focused on establishing peace that eliminates the need for conflict.
According to Yonhap News Agency, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac made these remarks following the detonation of North Korean land mines inside the DMZ in September, which injured three South Korean soldiers, two seriously. Wi emphasized the government's commitment to responding to the incident with clear principles and pursuing a policy of peaceful coexistence.
In response to the incident, Seoul has demanded an apology from North Korea, removed mines from the accident site, and ensured military readiness by test-firing a hypersonic missile. South Korea has also proposed military talks with North Korea to address uncertainties over the Military Demarcation Line. Meanwhile, North Korea denies responsibility for the mine blast and accuses South Korea of escalating tensions.
Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has threatened to deploy tactical strike assets along the inter-Korean border and resume propaganda broadcasts toward South Korea. Additionally, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac addressed South Korea's bid to retake wartime operational control (OPCON) of its troops from the United States, expressing expectations for tangible outcomes during upcoming defense talks.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Wi mentioned South Korea's consideration of increasing vessel and aircraft deployments to ensure freedom of navigation in the region. The government is contemplating strengthening the Cheonghae Unit, a South Korean anti-piracy mission, to cover the strait, though no final decision has been reached. South Korea aims to protect its merchant vessels, oil transportation routes, and nationals while adhering to its principles of non-interference in conflicts.
In the context of international relations, South Korea remains committed to assisting Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, despite a recent diplomatic dispute over the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war. The government is seeking to resolve the diplomatic standoff with Ukraine and continues to pursue close communication with the United States regarding potential dialogue with North Korea.
