Seoul: South Korea head coach Nikolajs Mazurs praised his team's timely performance following their commanding win over Japan in the men's basketball tournament at the Asian Games. The victory solidified South Korea's position at the top of Group A at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, central Japan.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea triumphed over Japan with a score of 100-83, securing their third consecutive victory and advancing to the quarterfinals as the top seed from Group A. Guard Lee Jung-hyun led the charge with 25 points, while center Jang Jae-seok contributed 18 points and eight rebounds. Lee, the Korean Basketball League MVP, made a significant impact with five successful three-pointers, three of which came consecutively late in the third quarter.
Jang played a crucial role in the paint, especially after being called upon early due to starting center Lee Seoung-hyun's foul trouble. Despite Japan's 42-40 lead at halftime, South Korea rallied in the second half, outscoring their opponents 60-41.
Coach Mazurs expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, noting their determination against Japan's formidable center Alex Kirk and sharp shooters. He emphasized the collective effort, stating, "Every player stepped up in the right moment even though it was a very hard, difficult battle."
Lee Jung-hyun, reflecting on the game, emphasized that their goal extends beyond this victory. "Our objective is to win the tournament," he stated, acknowledging the satisfaction of overcoming Japan after previous losses in friendly matches.
Veteran player Jang Jae-seok, at 35, acknowledged the physical demands of the game but was motivated by the support of his family and fans. He highlighted the significance of the win, expressing confidence in their pursuit of a gold medal.
Team captain Lee Seoung-hyun, despite a limited role in the game, expressed gratitude towards Lee Jung-hyun and Jang for their contributions. He emphasized the team's commitment to remaining focused and prepared for the upcoming quarterfinals, stating, "We will have a fresh start in the quarterfinals."
