South Korea, U.S., Japan Commence Joint Military Drills Amid Security Cooperation

Yokota air base/seoul: South Korea, the United States, and Japan began a five-day joint military exercise on Monday, emphasizing firm trilateral security cooperation. The Freedom Edge exercise proceeded as planned in international waters east and south of South Korea's Jeju Island. This comes despite recent scaling back of key Seoul-Washington drills following an order by U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced the commencement of the multidomain exercise, which aims to enhance strategic coordination among the three nations. The drills underscore the commitment to maintaining security in the region amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.

In related developments, South Korean shares surged by 4.6 percent on Monday, reaching a five-week high fueled by optimism in the artificial intelligence sector. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) closed significantly higher, marking a continued upward trend for the third consecutive session.

Meanwhile, South Korea is engaging in discussions with the international community to ensure the free passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The country's foreign ministry confirmed ongoing communications despite warnings from Iranian academic Mohammad Marandi regarding potential repercussions if Seoul joins U.S.-led navigation efforts in the region.

Additionally, South Korea's drug ministry announced the launch of the Global Cosmetic Regulatory Authority Summit (GCORAS) in Seoul. This newly established platform brings together global regulatory heads to discuss cosmetics regulations, with meetings scheduled to last until Wednesday.

In other news, Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won denied allegations of illegal lobbying related to a COVID-19 treatment in 2021. Kim, facing accusations of unlawful solicitation, admitted to a lack of caution in his previous requests concerning the medication's clinical trial approval.
